TRIP TO ASPEX

we had an outing to the Aspex gallery to view the PLATFORM exhibit on the 5th November 2019. the exhibit is open from the 4th October 2019 to the 22nd December 2019. the Aspex gallery is a free gallery next to gunwharf quays.

There were many visually appealing exhibits such as the "what is a wheel" by Katherine Smith, being such as substantial and odd looking piece of art it easily struck me as one of the most interesting displays there. it is a huge blue and white foam wheel structure reinforced by rope. it was made to represent how we as humans "make choices through movement and touch, in contrast to a society which is becoming more and more digital. the artist thought through the shape of the piece of art. as an ongoing circular shape, it represents movement and unending life. it gives an almost infinite life meaning, because since the shape never ends it is a metaphor for how life goes on.

Another favourite is the "fast food vegas" exhibit from Jaz Bartlett with the extremely compelling fast food signs that've been edited to give a certain emotion. the artist used well known graphology in the artwork such as the trademark mcdonalds logo and the well known light bulb signs with the "hot dogs" sign. her artwork "communicates this immersive excess within society" and she "aims to challenge the boundaries between these social hierarchies and categories that define our excess culture". I feel like she is an influential artist because she wants to battle the societal idealisms of greed which is impacting everyone both physically and mentally.

In total, I didn't find any inspiration for my illustration work in the gallery, purely because the exhibits were not my kind of style, so although I found them extremely interesting, I didn't find it productive. I did find their ideas and reasonings for their art inspirational however and in my art I wish to express my opinions inn an attempt to bring forward my ideas in an artistic and meaningful way.
